BBO Football Promotes Positivity

The BBO Program at i2i Scunthorpe has incorporated football to encourage and promote positive and active lifestyles.

The story in full:

As we already know, participating in any form of sport or physical activity is not only good for our bodies, but for our mental health. Playing a team sport, like football, is an excellent way to encourage good communication and working as a collective. It’s this kind of activity that can prepare you for functioning within the work environment. The BBO team found that no team can win or perform without communicating to each other, which is no different to working; communication is key in the workplace. The players each found that their Football match was able to promote the rewards of hard work.

Their first 5-a-side match was against the Probation Hostel in Scunthorpe, at Premier Pitches indoor 5-a-side centre. Although the team did lose in a 22-4 defeat, spirits remained high after their first match. After the match a conversation was had regarding the employability skills which they had been collectively developing through playing football. It was a surprise to some and something many hadn’t even considered previously. Following the success of the football game, the team were eager with their requests to carry the event on a more regular basis. After speaking to various local services and projects, i2i Scunthorpe found that Mencap, Springboard, Ongo, CGL, Healthy Lifestyle and the Probation Hostel were keen to organise future matches.

The positivity surrounding this football match has further led i2i’s BBO participants to want to attend weekly football sessions with CGL (drug & alcohol services). CGL have started football sessions at Central Park for their service users every Thursday evening, which i2i Scunthorpe have been invited to.
